Electrical and Lighting Safety
Insectopia recommend that electrical equipment and lamps are always checked thoroughly before each use, to ensure they have not been damaged in storage or during transit to your trapping venue. Faulty or damaged equipment should never be used. It should be disposed of safely, utilising local recycling facilities where available
Great care must always taken when installing and using electrics. Insectopia will not be held responsible for any injury, damage or consequential loss caused by but not limited to:
a) failure to check equipment is undamaged before each use (and the subsequent use of faulty or damaged electrics or lamps)
b) the fitting and/ or operation of electrics contrary to installation instructions and guidelines
c) failure to take any other appropriate and reasonable safety measures.
LIGHTING SAFETY WARNING:
MBT lamps must not be operated a) uncovered in rain, or b) with a shield in conditions of wind-blown slanting rain. Raindrops are likely to cause the bulb to crack or explode, with risk of personal injury. In inclement conditions Insectopia therefore recommend the use of UV lighting sources. Insectopia also recommend the use of UV lighting rather than MBT lighting for attended trapping and public events. (Please note: we no longer supply MBT lamps.)
Whilst UV lamps (actinic circline, blacklight, blacklight blue) run cool and should not be damaged by rain, it is important to ensure that all electrical components are equipped in such conditions to prevent personal electric shock. In addition where possible, a rainshield should be used (or other action taken) to protect lamps from rain which will greatly extend their life.
Never look directly into UV lights.
Use of UV protective glasses is recommended.
Ranger Moth Trap Details
The Ranger moth trap features mix-and-match elements to suit your personal trapping needs.
It's fully collapsible, unbelievably lightweight, and comes with a carry-bag.
The collecting chamber can be ground tethered or hung. Its frame and support legs are made of sturdy wire. The sides are of transparent fine-netting with an 'n' shaped double-slider zip for easy access, and there is a durable geotextile base for use on uneven or rough ground.
The Ranger central cone is made of strong, light-impervious cotton. Models suitable for use with actinic circline or horizontal straight actinics have velcro straps for easy mounting. The cone includes either a plain ring, or a 4" lampholder fitting-ring, depending on the model chosen. Two cone base aperture sizes are available (through which the moth enters the main body of the trap). A larger size of aperture may help in the capture of larger species, but conversely may increase the escape rate of smaller species. The PVC rainshield simply and quickly bolts on top of the cone unit.
The individual sections that make up the Ranger are available to purchase from our Spare Parts' page. Approx dimensions of base unit 10.5" (27cm) tall, 17.5" (44cm) in diameter. Maximum weight (including carry-bag & optional rainshield) 3lbs (1.5kg).
Vertical Actinic Steady Bar or Double Steady Bar (Optional Extra). The steady bar or bars can be fixed across the cone of certain models (see grid below) and must be used if you wish to vertically mount either single or multiple straight actinic tubes. Insectopia recommend the use of the double steady bar to ensure stability on longer actinic tubes..
Complete Lighting Rig (Optional Extras). Insectopia offer two different lighting rigs. A circline electrics set and showerproof control unit with a 22w actinic lamp, and a brass ES- fitting lampholder with either a 20w compact blacklight or a 25w compact blacklight-blue. All our rigs have a minimum 8m of cable and are fitted with a UK mains 13A 3-pin plug.
At Insectopia, we know that buying a moth trap can be a big investment. Our Photo Gallery has lots of photos so please take a look so you can be sure of your choice before you buy. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email us
IMPORTANT LIGHTING SAFETY WARNING: If you are planning to use your own MBT lamp, Insectopia recommends the use of a rainshield. MBT lamps must not be operated a) uncovered in rain, or b) with the shield in conditions of wind-blown slanting rain. Raindrops are likely to cause the bulb to crack or explode, with risk of personal injury. In inclement conditions Insectopia therefore recommend the use of blacklight or circline lighting sources, which run sufficiently cool not to be shattered by rain. Insectopia also recommend the use of actinics rather than MBT lighting for attended trapping and public events.
