Insectopia's moth traps are highly effective, with the well proven 'Robinson' style central cone layout. They can be fitted with a very wide range of electric light sources.
Insectopia recommend that care is always taken when installing and using electrics, and cannot be held responsible for any injury, damage or consequential loss caused by but not limited to:
a) the use of faulty or damaged electrics or lamps
b) the fitting and/ or operation of electrics contrary to installation instructions and guidelines
c) failing to take any appropriate and reasonable safety measures.
Electrical equipment and lamps should be checked thoroughly before each use, to ensure they have not been damaged in storage or during transit to your trapping venue. Faulty or damaged equipment should not be used. It should be disposed of safely, utilising local recycling facilities where available.
Bait traps are used to capture Lepidoptera attracted to fermenting fruit, faeces, and rotting meat. Our butterfly bait traps have a number of features designed to improve performance and ease of use.
A 36cm (14") square landing platform made of easy to clean semi-rigid pvc is used for both sizes of trap. The support cords attaching the main trap cylinder to the landing platform can be easily adjusted from 2cm (3/4") to up to 13cm (5") using sliding mini cord-locks, avoiding you having to struggle with strings and knots.
The main netting cylinder is fully washable and is sewn with no internal projecting seams. Four hanging points provide secure positioning. The cylinder is fitted with a full length vertical entry double-slider side zip, for easy access to the butterflies at any point, and for the removal of unwanted insects. Our larger trap also features an integral cone, to minimise butterfly escape.
Sieze the opportunity to snap up a bargain by purchasing our black or white non-fray nylon netting, and our NEW super fine polyester netting available by the metre, and make your own cages or sleeves.
Our netting is also superb for making mosquito nets, to keep biting insects at bay.
These bags and sleeves provide good indoor or outdoor habitats for some spiders and a very wide variety of insects that crawl, jump, or burrow, and adults emerging from pupae; including butterflies, moths, mantids, stick insects, beetles and aphids. Zipped Sleeves are particularly suitable for flying types for pairing and egg-laying.
Our Deluxe In-situ Bags are made of super-fine polyester, with double-stitched seams, and a corded draw-string plus a spring-toggle for easy closure. Super-fine polyester is our finest weave, and these bags provide a secure environment for the study of even very small insects. Simply place a bag over a branch, stem or leaf, tighten the draw-string, and secure with the toggle.
Insectopia Standard Sleeves and Zipped Sleeves can be used with one of our flowerpot frames or alternatively simply pulled over the branch of a tree or shrub and secured. Zipped Sleeves feature a sewn-in top panel and full length vertical zip for easy access whereas Standard Sleeves have an open style top, which can be secured by knotting the material, by tying with a length of cord (supplied), or by other means to suit you. Both these these types of sleeve have an elastic draw built into the hem which can simply be tied in a knot or bow to secure, or tightened using an optional spring toggle.
Our Budget Sleeves are plain netting tubes seamed down one edge. They are supplied in longer lengths, and can be trimmed to fit or can be cut into multiple lengths. A great way to get cut-price sleeves.
From our little Bug cage to our large Tent cage, Insectopia has the free-standing cage to suit your needs.
The sleeves on our Flowerpot cages can be used with or without the frame. If used without they can be simply pulled over the branch of a tree or shrub and secured at either end. If used with the frame they can be used to cover potted plants to create an instant self-contained habitat.
Our Bug and Critter cages are lightweight and portable. The popular budget Bug cage has an internal two-legged frame. The slightly larger Critter cage has a three-legged frame, improving stability for only a small additional cost.
Insectopia's rectangular tabletop® cages are particularly elegant for insect display, with gently rounded corners to avoid insects being trapped. Suitable for use indoors, outdoors, or in the laboratory or greenhouse, these versatile cages have a semi-rigid easy-clean plastic base, and large zipped easy access for attending to insects, changing plants, and cleaning.
At 1.45 (4'9") wide by approx 1.5m (5' tall), the tent cage is suitable for large insects and plants. It can be used on level surfaces outdoors, or in the greenhouse. A generous zipped access is provided for attending to plants and insects and for cleaning. The tent cage is also large enough for photography, with the photographer inside the tent.
Insectopia traditional hanging flight cages are used for emerging, flying, demonstrating, pairing and insect egg-laying, especially with lepidoptera. Because they are lightweight and portable these cages are also useful for travel, offering temporary accommodation for a wide range of insects on cut plants placed inside the cage. When not in use, the cage stores flat and takes up very little space.
The non-fray nylon net is sewn with no internal projecting seams. The cylindrical shape with near vertical sides ensures there is no ruching at the top, which could entangle insects. Our hanging cages are fitted with a vertical entry single-slider side zip. The cage top and bottom rings are made of rust resistant metal for durability.
Optional support rods are also available for our cages, enabling them to be converted to be placed on the floor or a table where hanging may be inconvenient, or for inspection.
Insectopia offers a bespoke design service, offering you the opportunity to have large or small cages produced for your specialist need.
We also offer a simple machine-seaming service. You'll be surprised at how cost-effective it can really be to have netting tubes and large netting panels made to your own dimensions!
