JOHNSON MOTH TRAPS

These moth traps are effective, with the well proven 'Robinson' style central cone layout. They can be fitted with a very wide range of electric light sources.

The trap prices do not include electrics. See below for moth trap lighting suppliers .

For advice on moth trap electrics please telephone 01267 236 329.

Johnson RANGER D Moth Trap
A full specification lightweight unit, complete with Rainshield and Clutch Bag which will also carry most electrics.
The Johnson Ranger D accepts a wide range of mercury vapour and actinic electrics, as shown below

This Registered Design collapsible fabric trap has a body shaped for stability and good wind resistance, a collapsible central cone which is carefully shaped for efficient capture, a large UV resistant rainshield which is vital for rain protection of MV and MBT bulbs, and a tough container bag.
Features -
- Self-standing, and can be hung or ground anchored.
- Wide double slider zip provides access to moths, with the light running.
- Quick assembly/dismantling of body, cone and rainshield.
- Size approx 41cm (16 inches) square x 35cm (14 inches) high . The trap collapses to approx 2 cm thickness. Weight, with bag, approx 1.3 kg (2.8lbs).

Some entomologist believe that a black cone will improve trapping, by increasing the dazzle effect of the light in front of a black background. See pictures above.

For all lights, trapping efficiency may be improved by restricting the exit area at the base of the cone, using the accessory cone extender, so reducing moth escape.

MV or MBT Bulb Lighting
Bulbs are 230 Volt operation requiring either a mains supply or generator.
-   The cone is suitable for MV (Mercury Vapour) or MBT (Mercury Blended Tungsten) bulbs up to 160 watts. The bulb holder is mounted in a hole formed by a wire ring which is fitted to the cone base. Normally the trap is supplied with a 38mm hole fitting for your ES bulb holder. A 26mm hole to suit your BC bulb holder is available on request.

These are either 12 volt Battery operation, or 230 volt operation. Contact lighting supplier for details.
A rainshield is not normally required.
-    Actinic tube lights usually perform best if mounted vertically. The simplest way to achieve this is to use a "Heath" type folding vane unit as supplied by Watkins and Doncaster, which is available in 6 watt, 8 watt, or 40 watt versions. The cone bulbholder ring is easily replaced by a plain ring, and the vane unit fits snug in the cone. This type of unit may also help trapping, as moths can be knocked down by the vanes.
-    Vertical mounting of single and multiple actinic tubes can also be made using an accessory Ranger Steady Bar, which is bolted across the cone. The tube then rests upright on the hole in the ring for the bulbholder. A hole blanking plug, supplied with the steady bar, acts to support thinner tubes. The accessory cone extender (see picture above), is designed to reduce moth escape.
-     Actinic tubes can be strapped horizontally across the cone. This is usually less effective than vertical mounting. 22 watt ring tubes can be mounted horizontally or vertically on the cone straps. Improved results are normally obtained by blanking the hole in the bulbholder ring, and fitting the accessory cone extension.

This Registered Design collapsible fabric trap has a integral central cone, and the effectiveness is further improved by the whole body shining with translucent 'UV glow' so making the best use of low wattage actinic tube lighting.
Features
- Mounting hole in the cone base for bulb holder, accepts MV or MBT bulbs up to 160 watt.
- Self-standing, and can be hung or ground anchored.
- Zip access to body.
- Size approx 37cm (14inch) diameter x 25cm (10 inches) high .
- Erected in seconds, the trap collapses to approx 1 cm thickness, and with a weight of only 290g (11oz.), is supremely portable, so it can even be carried under a jacket.

Normally the trap is supplied with a 38mm hole for your ES bulb holder. A 26mm hole to suit your BC bulb holder is available on request.

MV or MBT Bulb Lighting
Details as Ranger above. Trapping performance can be improved by using a cone extension ( see Ranger picture) to reduce the exit hole size. This will fit Safari.
The Safari trap does not have a rainshield, so bulbs must not be operated in rain, as the hot MV or MBT bulb will likely shatter with risk of electric shock and flying glass.

Fluorescent actinic tube lighting.
Details as Ranger above.
The Watkins and Doncaster vane actinic units will not fit Safari comfortably.
A Safari Steady Bar is available to mount straight single, or multiple tubes, vertically in the cone, using a blanking plug and cone extension for improved performance. A 22 watt ring tube tube can be mounted vertically on the mounting straps.
Actinic tubes can also be used across the cone top or inside the trap. This usually reduces the number of moths trapped, but when attended enables convenient examination of moths by netting and boxing.

Note -

In a small proportion of locations, aggressive biting ants, beetles and hornets can be encountered which might damage the lightweight netting used on this trap.
